Today Cleveland, coupled with Redcar, is a unitary authority in North Yorkshire, but until 1st April 1996 Cleveland was a county in its own right, while in the 18th century Cleveland was in the county of Durham and had its own racecourse. Although the racecourse never reached the same heights its near neighbour Redcar enjoys to this day, races did take place in Cleveland up to 1787. The final meeting was held on Wednesday 4th June 1787. Much earlier the Racing Calendar of 1752 detailed a 3 day meeting in May when a certain Bobby Shaftoe’s horse Young Badger won the £50 Stakes. By 1753 the Racing Calendar was reporting on a meeting taking place at Stokesley, near Cleveland, on Monday 9th July 1753 for a Fifty Pounds Purse.. |
